How debt consolidation and debt settlement differ for businesses, and how to decide which, if either, fits your situation.
Consolidation and settlement are often mentioned together, but they work in opposite ways.
Consolidation
New financing pays off multiple existing obligations, leaving one payment. It requires qualifying for the new financing. The total amount owed usually doesn't go down — the goal is a more manageable structure.
Settlement
Creditors are asked to accept less than the full balance. It depends on creditor agreement, may involve fees, and can carry risks such as default, legal action, and credit impact.
Choosing between them
If the business can afford its total obligations but not the current pace, consolidation or restructuring may be worth exploring. If the total is beyond what the business can realistically pay, settlement or legal options may be considered. Compare with our refinance and settlement calculators.
