How to Evaluate the Cost of Debt Relief

Providers use different fee models. Understanding them — and separating provider fees from payments to creditors — is essential to comparing real costs.

Percentage of enrolled debt

Calculated on the total balances you enroll, regardless of how much they're reduced. Predictable, but can be costly if reductions are small.

Percentage of documented savings

Calculated on the reduction achieved (balance minus settlement). Ties cost to results, but confirm how 'savings' is defined.

Fees tied to completed settlements

Owed only when a specific debt is resolved. Ask whether partial or rejected settlements generate any charge.

Fixed service fees

A set amount for defined services. Make sure you know exactly what's included.

Enrollment or setup charges

One-time fees at the start. Ask whether they're refundable.

Administrative or monthly fees

Ongoing charges that add up over long programs.

Separate legal fees

If attorneys are involved, their fees may be separate from the provider's.

Money reserved for settlements

Funds set aside to pay creditors are not the provider's fee — but ask who holds them and what fees apply to the account.

A lower settlement doesn't always mean the lowest total cost

The total cost is what you pay creditors plus all provider fees, account fees, and other expenses. A program that reaches a lower settlement but charges higher fees can cost more overall. Payment arrangements and the terms of each settlement matter too.
